About Project

“Main Directions of Special-Territorial Planning of Sustainable Development of Tourism Value Chain on the Example
of Georgia” is Mariam Sharia’s PhD thesis. She is a PhD student at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, Faculty of Economics and Business, Tourism and Hospitality Management.

The thesis supervisor is Dr. Ioseb Khelashvili, head of the tourism and hospitality management department at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University.

Goal – This research aims to identify scientifically substantiated and practically achievable directions of rational and sustainable development of the spatial-territorial planning of the value chain of the Georgian tourism industry and to create appropriate spatial models.

The scientific novelty of the dissertation will be the formation of typical spatial models of the tourism value chain, which will be based on the principle of rational use of the country’s resources and the values of sustainable development. Models can be used:

  • To reduce imports into the tourism value chain by stimulating the production of local competitive products;
  • To overcome unemployment;
  • To stimulate the entry of foreign currency into the country;
  • To stimulate investment attraction;
  • Promotion of the tourism-compatible sectors, that have export potential and are included in the tourism value chain;
  • Rationalization of environmental impact by the tourism industry;
  • For complex and versatile use of tourism infrastructure;
  • Strengthening the phenomenon of “invisible exports” and so on.
  •
