What is Tourism Value Chain?

The tourism value chain is like a journey map that shows all the steps involved in providing a tourist experience. It starts from the initial idea of traveling and goes all the way through to when the traveler heads back home. Each step along the chain involves different businesses and services working together, like transportation, accommodation, restaurants, and tour guides. By understanding the tourism value chain, businesses can see how they fit into the bigger picture of creating enjoyable and memorable experiences for travelers.

According to the scheme proposed by DEVCO and UNWTO (Marion, 2013), the tourism value chain can be defined as a process, in which private sector representatives, in collaboration with the state and the public, use specific resources to create value through various processes (product or service production, planning, finance, marketing, distribution, development, management, etc.) and sell the final product and service to tourists.

Why It is Important to Study Tourism Value Chain?

The tourism value chain serves as a conceptual framework to understand and analyze the sequential and interdependent processes involved in delivering a holistic tourism experience.

Studying the tourism value chain is crucial because it helps us understand how the different pieces of the tourism puzzle fit together. By analyzing each step in the chain, from planning a trip to the traveler’s return home, we can identify areas where improvements can be made to enhance the overall tourist experience. This understanding is vital for businesses and destinations alike, as it enables them to streamline operations, allocate resources effectively, and ultimately deliver better services to travelers. Additionally, studying the tourism value chain allows us to grasp the economic, social, and environmental impacts of tourism, aiding in the development of sustainable tourism practices that benefit both visitors and host communities.
